Application of Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps in Negative Pressure Priming Systems

2026-10-26 14:00

In water supply & drainage, pump stations, water conservancy, chemical and municipal water supply projects, standard centrifugal pumps generally have no self-priming ability. Trapped air inside the pump chamber and suction pipe prevents vacuum formation at startup, causing idling, no water delivery, heavy vibration, low efficiency and mechanical seal damage. The negative pressure priming system solves this issue, with the liquid ring vacuum pump as its core vacuum generator.

As a positive-displacement vacuum pump, it uses water as working fluid. The eccentric impeller spins to form a rotating liquid ring. Variable sealed chambers between the ring and blades draw in air when expanding and discharge gas with a little water when shrinking. Continuous air removal creates stable negative pressure. Atmospheric pressure pushes water from the sump into the centrifugal pump to finish priming for smooth wet startup.

A typical priming system includes a liquid ring vacuum pump, gas-water separator, make-up water piping, check valve, vacuum piping and automatic control parts. The vacuum pump runs for air extraction until vacuum reaches the set value. The main centrifugal pump then starts. The vacuum pump can stop on standby or run intermittently to hold vacuum and avoid loss of prime.

Liquid ring vacuum pumps stand out for priming service. Simple structure means fewer precision seals, low failure rate and easy maintenance — just regular water replenishment and checks on bearings and seals. Water medium offers cooling and handles water vapor well, ideal for moist priming conditions with less blade wear. Stable operation with moderate vibration and noise suits continuous or intermittent pump station use.

This solution is widely used for municipal intake pumps, sewage lifting stations, circulating water systems, chemical water supply units and irrigation pumps. It is the mainstream choice for suction-lift installations where the water level sits below the centrifugal pump. For chemical service, stainless steel casings and corrosion-resistant mechanical seals are available for mildly corrosive media.

Important notes for selection and operation: Ultimate vacuum drops with rising water temperature, so working water cooling is required in hot environments. It is not fit for heavy dust or sludge; fit an inlet filter to protect the impeller and casing. Match pumping speed based on pipeline volume, evacuation time and target vacuum. Too small causes slow priming; too large wastes power.

In short, liquid ring vacuum pumps are the top choice for negative pressure priming systems due to reliable performance, good vapor tolerance and low maintenance cost. It overcomes the non-self-priming limitation of centrifugal pumps, enables fast, safe pump startup and is essential for stable suction-lift water supply systems.
