Difference between Self‑priming Pumps and Centrifugal Pumps

In terms of classification, the self‑priming pump is a special type of centrifugal pump, yet its operation differs greatly from standard ordinary centrifugal pumps.

A standard centrifugal pump delivers water by centrifugal force generated from impeller rotation. It has a strict prerequisite: the pump casing and the entire suction pipeline must be fully filled with water and purged of air before startup. If air enters the suction pipe, the pump will fail to draw water normally. After shutdown, water inside the suction line tends to flow back to the water source, which usually requires refilling the pump upon the next startup. Therefore, conventional centrifugal pumps are preferably installed below the water level. If the pump is placed above the water source, a foot valve has to be fitted additionally to retain water and prevent backflow. Standard centrifugal pumps feature high overall efficiency, delivering better flow rate and head under the same motor power. They have a simple structure, easy maintenance and lower cost. Their downside lies in stringent requirements for pipeline tightness; even minor air leakage will stop water suction. Repeated priming becomes troublesome under frequent start‑stop conditions. They are suitable for applications with a stable water level, convenient priming access and long‑time continuous operation, such as water circulation, fixed tank water supply and pipeline pressurization.

Self‑priming pumps adopt modified construction with a built‑in water‑storage chamber, recirculation and non‑return structures. They only need to be filled with water for the first‑time use. A certain volume of water can remain inside the pump chamber after normal shutdown, eliminating repeated priming for every startup. During operation, the residual water inside the pump chamber mixes with air from the suction pipe, gradually venting air out of the pipeline and creating negative pressure for water intake. A small amount of entrained air is tolerable, and slight pipeline leakage will not immediately interrupt pumping. Its biggest advantage is that it can be installed above the water surface for flexible layout, which works well for well water, sump water intake, frequent on‑off cycles and sites where repeated priming is inconvenient. Compared with ordinary centrifugal pumps of identical power, self‑priming pumps deliver slightly lower head and flow rate with marginally reduced efficiency and a higher price. The narrow internal self‑priming recirculation passage is prone to clogging by sand or solid impurities carried in water, requiring extra attention in routine maintenance. Its suction lift also has a limit; standard models generally have a maximum suction height of 4‑8 meters, beyond which water cannot be lifted.

In brief, ordinary centrifugal pumps are preferred when installation permits and the water level stays stable. Self‑priming pumps are recommended if the pump has to be mounted above the water surface and regular priming is impractical.
